Formula or calculation method
Trees per acre
trees per acre = 43,560 ÷ (in-row spacing × row spacing)
43,560 is square feet per acre.
Spacing with acres
total trees = trees per acre × acres
Rectangular block
- rows in block = floor(block width ÷ row spacing)
- trees per row = floor(block length ÷ in-row spacing)
- block tree capacity = rows × trees per row
The block mode uses integer counts (floored) and does not add partial rows.
Definitions of inputs
- In-row spacing — Distance between trees within a row, in feet.
- Row spacing — Distance between tree rows, in feet.
- Acres — Total planted area when using the acres mode.
- Block length / width — Rectangular block dimensions in feet for capacity mode.
Worked example
Example only — not a recommendation.
12 ft between rows and 4 ft in-row:
- Trees per acre = 43,560 ÷ (12 × 4) = 43,560 ÷ 48 = 908 trees/acre
- On 5 acres: 908 × 5 = 4,540 trees
How to interpret the result
Compare density options against equipment access, rootstock vigor, and training system. Confirm final layout with a planting plan. Headlands and irregular edges will reduce actual counts below the rectangular estimate.
