What this calculator determines

Theoretical field capacity in acres per hour, and optional hours to cover a entered acreage.

Formula or calculation method

acres per hour = (width in feet × speed in mph × field efficiency %) ÷ 8.25

hours needed = acres ÷ acres per hour

The divisor 8.25 equals 43,560 square feet per acre ÷ 5,280 feet per mile.

Definitions of inputs

  • Implement width — Effective working width of the boom, mower, or other implement, in feet.
  • Travel speed — Ground speed in miles per hour.
  • Field efficiency — Percent of time spent effectively covering ground (turns, overlaps, refills reduce this; typical range 60–85%).
  • Acres — Optional area to translate capacity into total hours.

Worked example

Example only — not a recommendation.

A 16 ft sprayer at 3 mph with 75% field efficiency:

  • Acres/hour = (16 × 3 × 0.75) ÷ 8.25 = 36 ÷ 8.25 ≈ 4.36 acres/hour
  • For 20 acres: 20 ÷ 4.36 ≈ 4.6 hours

How to interpret the result

Use acres per hour to plan block coverage time and compare equipment setups. Lower field efficiency when turns, headlands, or refills dominate the job.

Limitations

  • Does not account for terrain, canopy, traffic patterns, or machine limits beyond the efficiency you enter.
