The planted area of a rectangular block in square feet and acres from width and length.

Formula or calculation method

square feet = width (ft) × length (ft)

acres = square feet ÷ 43,560

43,560 is the number of square feet in one acre.

Definitions of inputs

  • Width — One side of the rectangular planting, in feet (often the across-row or headland-to-headland distance).
  • Length — The other side of the rectangular planting, in feet (often the along-row distance).

Either dimension can be entered as width or length; the product is the same.

Worked example

Example only — not a recommendation.

A planting that is 330 ft wide and 660 ft long:

  • Square feet = 330 × 660 = 217,800 sq ft
  • Acres = 217,800 ÷ 43,560 = 5.00 acres

How to interpret the result

Use the acre figure for rate math, tank planning, and spacing estimates. Measure to the planted edges you intend to treat or plant; leave out unused corners or non-planted strips if you need net planted acres only.

Assumptions

  • The planting is a rectangle with uniform width and length.
  • Dimensions are measured in feet along the planted block edges.

Limitations

  • Does not subtract headlands, drive rows, or irregular edges.
  • Does not convert from meters, yards, or chains; convert those units to feet first.
